Take a deep breath and drink in fresh ocean air, feel the warm Queensland sun against your back as the sand between your toes transforms into a desert of gold. Barely more than an arm’s length away the undisturbed Pacific ocean crashes against a perfect beach. This is what the name Marcoola Beach brings to the mind, a simple summer retreat in the heart of the Sunshine Coast.
Unburdened by the typical touristy hustle-and-bustle of more popular beach destinations like Noosa or Surfer’s Paradise, Marcoola is a no-strings-attached summer romance, complete with freshly baked goodies from the incredibly tasty Marcoola Bakery, that leaves you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world.
There’s just nothing like being able to walk for kilometres on pristine white sand, or take a dip in the ocean, without the mass crowds that are known to descend on South-East Queensland every summer – and all only a few metres from the door of our holiday apartment. My favourite part was being able to walk 4km on the beach and find myself at the slightly more well-known Mudjimba beach, where I spent a few hours exploring the famous volcanic-rock pools (and they make for some good photos!).
With the walk over it was time for an obviously super-healthy breakfast of pancakes with ice-cream and fresh strawberries at The Organic Apple Coffee House across the road, where the staff behind the counter were only too happy to tell us about the best spots around town; after I had tucked into that ultra-light delicious goodness that constitutes the best pancakes I have ever had, and I don’t say that lightly.
With a stretch of shops, including a chemist, general store, and Chinese take-out, only a short trip across the main road from the main resorts Marcoola is the perfect destination for families or those that just want to put the car away and retreat into a chilled-out beach lifestyle – something I am always completely on board with.
After the hectic, stressful period of the end of the University year and exams galore, a weekend retreat was something I desperately wanted and Marcoola certainly delivered. You just can’t go wrong with reading a hilarious Jonas Jonasson novel by the pool, or on the balcony with some ice-tea in hand and to-die-for ocean views if only I could drag my eyes away from the pages of the book. Seriously, any The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared fans out there, I want you to know that I am hooked and would love to chat!
Now I love a good adventure just as much as the next wanderer, and there’s just a certain something to backpacking through Europe that is indeed missing from an explore-your-own-backyard holiday like this one, but a change in pace every once in a while never did anyone any harm; indeed it’s experiencing a different type of holiday that made me appreciate all the things I love about my city lifestyle and usual full-on travel style.
Marcoola Beach is an often underrated gem only a few hours from Brisbane that heartily deserves my personal recommendation of perfect spot for a beach retreat – even if I did put on some well-deserved weight from all those delicious, hand-made lamingtons purchased from the aforementioned bakery. Can anyone say no regrets!
